Vanilla Poached Pears
Appliance: Rice Cooker - 8 cup capacity and larger.

Ingredients
   4 cups water
   2 cups sugar
   1/2 vanilla bean, split OR 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
   4 firm pears, any variety (barely ripe)


Directions
Add water and vanilla to the rice cooker's inner cooking bowl and press Cook button. Use Steam Cooking setting, if applicable, and bring to a boil.

Meanwhile, peel and halve pears from stem to bottom. Using a melon baller or small spoon, scoop core from each pear half, and remove fibers to the base of the stem. Stem may be removed or left attached for a decorative effect.

Once water has come to a boil, add sugar and stir until fully dissolved. Add pears. Cover and cook 20 minutes.

The pears will want to float, so be sure to rotate them very gently every five minutes or so to ensure even cooking. Alternatively, weigh the pears down with a silicone steamer basket or a sheet of parchment (not waxed) paper cut to fit inside your rice cooker.

Serve warm, or allow pears to cool to room temperature and refrigerate up to three days.
